Wairarapa Rural Fire District - Restricted Fire Season

Fire By Permit Only

Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 22 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act, 1977, that a:

RESTRICTED FIRE SEASON has been imposed on the lighting of fires in the open on all lands within the Wairarapa Rural Fire District.

The RESTRICTED FIRE SEASON is in force from 18 January 2017, and shall remain in force until revoked by a further notice. Failure to comply with this Notice constitutes an offence under Section 61 of the Forest and Rural Fires Act, 1977. NO FIRES MAY BE LIT IN THE OPEN AIR during the Restricted Fire Season without a Fire Permit having first been issued by the Wairarapa Rural Fire District.

It is an offense to set on fire in the open air any combustible material whatsoever, except pursuant to the written Fire Permit issued by a Rural Fire Officer for the Wairarapa Rural Fire District.

A Fire Permit is required for campfires, bonfires, rubbish fires, wood fired barbeques, braziers, fireworks, thermettes, pizza ovens, chinese Lanterns, welding plants, portable forges, and open incinerators. Fire Permits are not required for gas barbeques and properly constructed back yard incinerators which have approved spark arrestors fitted.

In all cases, a person lighting a fire with a Fire Permit or using an exempt item shall remain in attendance at the fire until it is fully extinguished. A Fire Permit shall not be a legal defense against claims for damage caused by any, fire that such fire was of the type, or lit at the time permitted by this notice.

Applications for Fire Permits should be made to the Wairarapa Rural Fire District office at the Masterton Fire Station during normal office hours (8:00 am to 4:30 pm) or on line at www.wrfd.org.nz. There is no charge for Fire Permits.
