Masterton District Council is working with Eastside Community Group to keep our Waipoua River recreational trails safe for walkers and cyclists.

The Council is installing chicanes to deter motorcyclists from using the trail, a problem identified by the community.

The Council’s Manager of Community Facilities and Activities said the chicanes were designed to allow cyclists access, as well as people with prams and pushchairs.

“Eastside Community Group asked us to come up with options to try and stop people using motorbikes on the trails, and we’re making a start on this with the chicanes near the Colombo Road bridge.

“This is an issue that will take time to address, but we hope the message gets through that motorised vehicles are not what the recreational trails are designed for.”
