The Colombo Road bridge over the Waipoua River will be closed entirely on Monday and Tuesday next week, 22-23 August, as work starts on replacement of the southbound side of the bridge.

The first stage is to temporarily relocate the sewer line that runs under the bridge.

The closure period is planned to last from 5am on Monday 22 August to 7pm on Tuesday 23 August, but this timeframe is subject to weather and successful completion of the work.

The Council appreciates this will cause disruption to motorists and pedestrians, and scheduled the work to minimise this. Given the use of sports facilities in the area, a weekend closure was not considered an option.

Pedestrian access over the northbound bridge will remain available, with some disruptions at times. Pedestrians are asked to follow the signs and directions of onsite personnel. Alternatively, pedestrian access is also available via the Waipoua recreation trail and the swing bridge by Queen Elizabeth Park.

Vehicles should use Church and Dixon streets, and SH2, between Te Ore Ore Road and Colombo Road.

The single lane currently in use on the bridge will reopen after completion of work to move the sewer line. Demolition of the old bridge will follow, and it is hoped to keep the lane open during this activity, though some intermittent disruptions may be unavoidable.

The Council apologises for the disruption and thanks bridge users for their patience.
