Check out the fantastic range of community events planned to celebrate Matariki from 20-26 June. Each event is linked to particular stars in the Matariki constellation, that have different significance in the Māori worldview. There’s something for everyone!

NGĀ HAERENGA/JOURNEYS – CELEBRATING MATARIKI
Aratoi would like you to come explore and enjoy the amazing artwork celebrating Matariki hosted in one of their Galleries.

LETTING GO
Pathways are creating a space for you to come in and design and decorate a star and to write your grief and loss as an act of letting go – casting your grief and loss and allowing Ururangi (the star that determines the nature of the winds) to take your burden.

MATARIKI AT THE LIBRARY
The Masterton Library brings you all-day Star Crafts. There will be a different craft each day. All welcome.

STAR OF REMEMBRANCE
The Matariki Pōhutakawa star connects us to the loved ones whom have passed away, its allows us to reflect, remember and renew. Like the stars in the sky our loved ones are in our memories and our hearts. Palliative Care would like you to come and meet the community team that support the patients and whānau on that journey. You may wish to come and chat to the Kahukura and Hospice team, write your loved ones name on a star and add to our wall of remembrance or you may have questions about what services are available. We welcome all.

MATARIKI TĀPUAPUA EVENING
Chanel College invites you to an evening focusing on Hiwa-i-te-rangi celebrating Matariki with cultural performances, pop-up drama groups, astronomy (weather dependent), stargazing, kai, Māori games and scavenger hunts. All welcome.

LIVING OUR DREAMS
Age Concern Wairarapa brings you a celebration for older people and kaumātua to come together to enjoy and discuss your hopes and dreams for the future while enjoying kai and performances from the talented students at Masterton Intermediate School (Kapa Haka, Polyfest dancers, Hip Hop and instrumentals).

Matariki-themed story times: Books about Matariki, waiata, followed by a craft (pre-school ages) . Wednesday’s stories will be in English and Thursday’s stories will be in Te Reo Māori.

A MORNING AT FERNRIDGE
Come and enjoy a morning celebration at Fernridge School, embrace the school culture enjoy morning stargazing, talks about Matariki and enjoy a performance from Fernridge School Kapa Haka. The school will also be running a fundraiser and selling parakuihi (breakfast).

MATARIKI AT MŌTŪWAIRAKA MARAE
Ngāi Tūmapūhia-ā-Rangi ki Mōtūwairaka Inc. and Riversdale beach community association invite you to come and celebrate the first time Matariki is being celebrated as a public holiday- Come and enjoy a Powhiri, stories about Matariki, a light kai and a chance to meet new people.

STARRY NIGHTS AT MĀNUKA RESERVE
The Mānuka Reserve Group invite you to explore the beauty of Mānuka reserve over two evenings – bring your torches, explore, and enjoy rock painting . Members of Mānuka Reserve Group will be present for assistance and discussion. Mānuka reserve is the perfect spot to see the clear starry night sky across the golf course as it is an unpolluted light area where the stars are amazing.

FIND YOUR WAY
Aratoi invites you to navigate using the stars with Under the Stars – come and learn and experience the beauty and art of reading stars for seasonal markers, navigational markers, and special times of the year. An opportunity not to be missed.

Matariki
Matariki is the star that signifies reflection, hope, our connection to the environment and the gathering of people. Matariki is also connected to the health and wellbeing of people.

Pōhutukawa
Pōhutukawa is the star connected to those that have passed on.

Waitī
Waitī is connected with all fresh water bodies and the food sources that are sustained by those waters.

Waitā
Waitā is associated with the ocean, and food sources within it.

Waipuna-ā-Rangi
Waipuna-ā-Rangi is connected with the rain.

Tupuānuku
Tupuānuku is the star connected with everything that grows within the soil to be harvested or gathered for food.

Tupuārangi
Tupuārangi is connected with everything that grows up in the trees: fruits, berries and birds.

Ururangi
Ururangi is the star connected with the winds.
