More than $120,000 has been allocated for activities enhancing community wellbeing in grants announced by Masterton District Council’s Awards and Grants Committee.
Community wellbeing grants have been approved for 33 groups, with a further $33,000 in community event grants approved for 11 events.
Committee chair Councillor Gary Caffell said the grants reflected the focus of the council’s wellbeing strategy, He Hiringa Tangata, He Hiringa Whenua.
“The council’s commitment to the wellbeing of our community is set out in our wellbeing strategy, which has a focus on social, cultural, environmental, and economic wellbeings,” he said. “This year we also broadened our criteria to take into account the impact of COVID-19.
“The outstanding work of many groups in our community plays a key role in enhancing community wellbeing, and we look forward to hearing about the results of these grants.
“Of course, funds are limited, and there are some activities we cannot contribute to in these grants, but we welcome future applications.”
The council also offered assistance to groups in applying for government support.
The Community Wellbeing Grants include $10,000 for Shelter Masterton Incorporated, as a contribution towards the operating expenses of the new transition house for homeless people, and $12,000 for the Wairarapa Community Centre Trust.
The Royal NZ Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Wairarapa Healthy Homes Steering Group also receive $10,000 each, and Riversdale Surf Lifesaving Club receives $8,000.
In response to COVID-19, a second round of Community Wellbeing Grants will take place this financial year, with the next round of applications opening on 18 January 2021.
