The Ngaumutawa Road animal shelter was demolished in mid-2021 after the deterioration of the building.
The project to build a new shelter was signalled in the 2021-31 Long Term Plan which stated the upgrade would provide a safer, more comfortable facility for both animals and staff, and could include an increase in kennel numbers and offer a better level of service to dog owners.
The new shelter has been designed to meet the standards required in the Animal Welfare Act, including:
- appropriate facilities to quarantine new arrivals
- cages of appropriate size for animals with behavioural needs
- a covered exercise area for use when weather is bad
- an area that allows animals to be left unsupervised outside
- facilities for new puppies
- indoor shelter for cages with adequate ventilation
- security at the site to prevent unauthorised access.
$2.2m has been set aside for the build in the 2024/25 LTP budget and site works are currently underway.
