Toxic algae blooms in Ruamāhanga River

Red alert warnings are in place for the Ruamāhanga River from Double Bridges to Kokotau, due to moderate amounts of toxic algae mats on the river’s edge. People are advised not to swim or let dogs near the water, including at Te Ore Ore and The Cliffs. Even a small amount of algae can kill a dog.

Bodle Drive Improvements

Back in 2021, we put together a road improvement plan for Bodle Drive. That plan was all about adding pedestrian pathways, visitor parking, and making sure buses could get through. Now with the Riversdale Beach Community Plan (2024-2034) completed we are revisiting this plan to make sure it fits the needs of the Riversdale Beach Community and consider the changes after Cyclone Gabrielle hit in early 2023.

The plan could include adding picnic spaces for beachgoers, improving vehicle access and flow, and possibly adding extra parking for the community while retaining its special coastal character.

The area proposed for development is shown in the image below.

What's happening?

This is the first step in the project. Here’s a quick rundown of what the next steps are:

  1. Chat with key stakeholders
  2. Draft the concept plan
  3. Engage with Riversdale residents and stakeholders about the draft
  4. Gather your feedback and finalise the plan
  5. Present the concept plan to Councillors

If Elected Members gives it the green light, we’ll seek funding to include the project in the next Annual Plan or Long-Term Plan.
