Whakatū Puninga Pokanoa
The Masterton District Council welcomes campers and encourages you to explore everything our region has to offer, from the wild coast at Castlepoint, to the native bush and tranquil rivers.
Campers are asked to stay in holiday parks, designated camping sites or DOC camping areas. If you want to access freedom camping areas you need a fully self-contained vehicle that includes a toilet, shower and wastewater facilities.
DoC campsites can be found at:
- Kiriwhakapapa which is about 20kms North of Masterton and features a lovely family campsite beside a creek, with an old logging and exotic (redwood) forestry trial area nearby. You must pay cash for your stay: $8 per adult and $4 per child, under 5’s go free.
- Holdsworth is located 2km South of Masterton beneath the Tararua Ranges. There are walks, fishing and swimming nearby as well as grassed areas for sports. You must pay cash for your stay: $8 per adult and $4 per child, under 5’s go free.
