Manager Training and Qualifications

Managers of licensed premises need to understand and comply with New Zealand’s alcohol laws. Before applying for a Manager’s Certificate, you need to complete specific training and qualifications.

 

New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) unit standards

Managers are required to complete two unit standards from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority:

  • 4646 — Demonstrate knowledge of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.
  • 16705 — Demonstrate knowledge of host responsibility requirements as a duty manager of licensed premises.

The unit standards complement the Licence Controller Qualification course.

The unit standards can be gained in a one day course or online study. A list of trainers can be found on the Service IQ Site.

 

When you have gained the unit standards, you’ll need to request:

  • An LCQ application form from Service IQ, the hospitality industry training organisation
  • A special student ID number, known as a ‘hook on number’, from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.
