Masterton District Council is taking advantage of school holidays to make access to Lakeview School safer for pedestrians.

The project involves construction of a raised platform on Colombo Road, near the intersection with Te Ore Ore Road.

This work will require Colombo Road to be closed at the intersection from 10-21 January.

Access to Henley Lake and Masterton Medical will remain open.

Council Chief Executive David Hopman said the road closure was the best way to get the work done as speedily as possible.

“We appreciate this will be an inconvenience for some motorists but by closing the road we can get this important work done in half the time,” he said.

“This project will improve the safety for pedestrians, children in particular, going to and from Lakeview School, and doing the work during the school holiday makes good sense.”

Diversions via Chapel and Dixon Streets will be available for west-bound traffic on Te Ore Ore Road.

Heavy vehicles travelling east on Te Ore Ore Road requiring turning space are recommended to use the school bus turning space near the turn-off to Bideford on the Masterton-Castlepoint Road.

In other work to improve safety for schools, pedestrian refuge spaces will be created outside Fernridge School on Upper Plain Road, also scheduled to start on 10 January.

Upper Plain Road will remain open with traffic management measures in place.

After the first phases of work, a second raised platform will be constructed across Colombo Road near the netball courts, and a pedestrian refuge space built across Upper Plain Road near the intersection with Kibblewhite Road. In both cases, the roads will remain open with traffic management measures in place.
