The Masterton District Council has a Mayor and eight Councillors. These positions are elected within the Masterton Whakaoriori General Ward, Masterton Whakaoriori Māori Ward, and at-large, every three years. Responsibility for Council activities sits with the Mayor and Councillors.
The Council makes decisions about the range of services and activities that will be provided. The Council sets the policy for these and then the staff are asked to do the work to make sure the services are provided. The Council has some freedom to decide on its aims and policies but it has to do this within the laws, regulations and requirements that are set by Central Government.
