Colombo Road bridge reopens
Masterton’s Colombo Road bridge over the Waipoua River is now fully open, after construction of a new bridge to replace the old eastern, south-bound section.
The $4.5 million job has been completed ahead of the anticipated June completion date by contractor Concrete Structures (NZ) Ltd.
With the bridge being a major part of the route for students heading to and from Lakeview School, the new section features an extra wide footpath to increase safety for all users.
New pedestrian refuge islands have also been installed on the northern side of the bridge as safe crossing point.
Masterton Mayor Gary Caffell welcomed completion of the work.
“We know that operating the bridge with a single lane over the past year has been inconvenient for some users so we appreciate their patience during this work.
“I am confident the new bridge will prove resilient for many years to come.”
The south-bound lane was closed to traffic during high flows in the river as a result of ex-Cyclone Dovi last year, and the Council received advice from structural engineers indicating it required replacement.
