Panama Village Fire
For the Record
The Wairarapa Times-Age had some questions about a small fire that broke out at Panama Village this morning.
The following answers to their questions were provided, attributable to Corin Haines, Manager Community, Facilities and Amenities.
- Can the council confirm what the workshop/garage was being used for? The garage was being used as storage by the custodian.
- and that it belonged to the Panama Village caretaker? To the custodian, yes.
- Is the caretaker a contractor or employed by the council? The role of custodian is a contract position.
- When was the council alerted to the fire? We were made aware at 10am this morning.
- What is the council's understanding of what happened? We understand a lithium battery combusted.
- What steps is the council taking to support residents/caretaker? We will let the residents know what happened, and that happily no person or other properties were affected or at risk due to the fire. I have spoken with the Custodian and will check in with him in the coming days to ensure he is ok.
- Is the council aware of any damage beyond the workshop/garage? No, the fire was contained.
- How many people currently reside at Panama Village? There are 44 units at Panama Village.
