The Tuia mentoring programme is an intentional, long-term, intergenerational approach to developing and enhancing how rangatahi (youth) Māori contribute to their communities throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
Tuia is a national programme, which involves a mayor selecting and mentoring a rangatahi Māori from their rohe (region). It is envisaged the rangatahi will be mentored every month through informal meetings, and attend formal occasions that will assist the young person’s development as a leader.
The relationship provides both partners with the opportunity to gain a deeper insight into intergenerational issues, cultural values, and experiences.
Rangatahi will also have the opportunity to build peer networks with graduates of the programme, obtain support, and receive leadership training by attending leadership development wānanga (courses) thorough the year.
