If you’re planning to build in the Masterton district, you will need a building consent. A building consent is the formal approval issued by a building consent authority stating that certain works, if properly constructed in accordance with the plans and specification will comply with the requirements of the New Zealand Building Act, Building Regulations, and the Building Code. Most building work requires a building consent, but some minor work is exempt under Schedule 1 of the Act. You can check the District Plan to see if you will also need resource consent.
For detailed consumer information regarding building legislation from our Building Consent Authority please refer to our Building Consent Authority Guidance (PDF, 7.8KB).
If you have any questions you can always get in touch with the building team by calling 06 370 6300.
During building you will need to book different inspections, these will be listed in your consent paperwork.
You can build, renovate or repair your own home using the Owner-Builder Exemption, but you still need to meet Building Code requirements.
If building works have been undertaken without first obtaining a building consent, you can apply for a Certificate of Acceptance (CoA).
