There are lots of great activities in the park that are suitable for people of all ages and abilities.
Miniature Train
You will find the highly popular miniature train on the park island. It runs every weekend from 11am-4pm depending on the weather and driver availability. The train is operated by volunteers at the Masterton Miniature Train Society. You can see any updates about timetables on their Facebook page.
Boating
You can go boating on the lake with rowboats, kayaks and pedal boats that are all available for hire from the boatshed located at the end of Memorial Drive. Lifejackets, cushions and bread for the ducks are supplied with each boat ride. Built in the 1950s the pedal boats have been beautifully restored and all can comfortably hold 2 adults and 1-2 children, the rowboats have room for 4 adults, and kayaks are 2-seaters. Boats can also be arranged for groups or for pirate/princess birthday parties. They are open every weekend and public holiday from 10am – 5pm and every day during the school holidays. Minigolf
Masterton minigolf is an 18-hole course located on Dixon Street next to the Kids Own Playground and the Croquet Club. It has a fun course with access for wheelchairs and pushchairs. It is also available for group bookings. The course is run by the Rotary Club of Masterton South, check out their Facebook page for more information.
Cycling
You can explore the park and our recreation trails by hiring bikes from RotoCycle at the mini golf kiosk. They offer adult and children’s cycles for two-hour hire up to a whole day. Masterton has a wide range of cycle trails – through the park, around Henley Lake and along the Waipoua River. RotoCycle will give you helmets, locks, baskets and backpacks. The bikes are owned by the Rotary Club of Masterton South, so all profits go to the community.
If you have your own bicycle you can also access the BMX Track from Memorial Drive in the park.
Skating
You can access the Masterton Skatepark from Memorial Drive. This national-level course is open to anyone who skates or scooters. See more on their Facebook page and Instagram channel.
Deer Farm
Across the swingbridge, you will find a deer park that is managed by the Wairarapa branch of the New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association. You can feed the deer fruit, vegetables and bread through the fence.
