Toxic algae blooms in Ruamāhanga and Waipoua Rivers

Red alert warnings are in place for the Waipoua River and the Ruamāhanga River from Double Bridges to Kokotau, including Te Ore Ore and The Cliffs. People are advised not to swim or let dogs near the water. Even a small amount of algae can kill a dog.

Henley Lake Active Space Upgrade

In 2023 we asked the community about the playground at Henley Lake and how it could be improved. The key things you told us were important included:

  • A fenced playground area for children
  • Accessible play equipment for those with mobility constraints or disabilities
  • Exercise equipment that is close together to promote social interaction rather than spread out and isolated
  • Introducing a ‘Mara hupara’ approach, creating play opportunities in a natural environment so play is self-directed and promotes use of imagination
  • Obstacle course activities and climbing frames
  • The need for shade and having drinking water available
  • Toilet facilities in close proximity
  • A family space with picnic tables and seating that is also accessible for wheelchairs
  • Play equipment that is eco-friendly, durable, recyclable and/or natural

As a result of the feedback, we have moved the location of the playground closer to the toilet facilities which also supports improved accessibility. Creo, the designers have created a plan with space for everyone to get active and enjoy the beautiful environment. The new space includes:

  • An all-ages obstacle course
  • Four outdoor exercise machines located together
  • A playground with accessible play equipment, picnic tables and shade.

Work to prepare the ground will begin in February with equipment is expected to arrive in March. Installation will happen shortly after it arrives, but final completion dates will depend on the equipment being supplied on time.
