Hood Aerodrome Project

The purpose of this project is to transform Hood Aerodrome into a more modern, functional airport and centre for aviation activity, with capacity for growth beyond the current activity.

The project will deliver:

  • runway widening and resurfacing
  • an extention of the terminal apron
  • an upgrade or replacement of airfield fixtures (lighting, windsock etc)
  • an upgrade or installation of security fencing (to meet CAA Qualification Certification requirements)
  • water, wastewater and electrical upgrades and extension to support hangar development
  • the development of access roads to support hangar development.

Hood plans aim to capitalise on infrastructure work

Exciting plans to increase hangar space at Hood Aerodrome have been announced by Masterton District Council to maximise the benefit of infrastructure improvements underway at the aerodrome.

A new space adjacent to the runway has been earmarked for approximately 33 hangar sites of varying sizes ranging from 15m x 10m power-only sites to 21m x 12m fully serviced hangars with access to a sealed taxiway. The area will be accessible from Manaia Road.

There is further potential for more commercial development, as well as an area protected for possible future terminal expansion.

The plans include potential changes on Moncrieff Drive, where space has been identified for future commercial or visitor attractions. Read the media release on the plans.

The diagram below is the concept plan. Once the design is finalised, resource consent will be lodged and we will begin the procurement process for a contractor. We will keep you up to date as we progress over the next few weeks. A larger version of the diagram can be viewed here.

Project updates

Runway resealing

Runway works will restart in October. We have received the draft programme from the contractor and had a planning session with them earlier this week to work through the details. Once we have a confirmed programme, we will let you know the duration of the works and the exact dates.

Certification

The application for certification has been submitted to CAA. CAA will be on-site on 9 and 10 October for the inspection and demonstration phase of our application.

Runway

The sealed runway 06/24 is now open.

The back-up plan was implemented to ensure the aerodrome was operational for the winter (we didn’t want to rely on the grass runway over this time). This involved placing a temporary seal over the extended sides of the runway and apron to protect it during the cold weather.

The work will recommence in November and will take approximately four weeks for asphalting and painting.

Lighting

The design is underway and is due to be complete in August. The Council will then go to market to procure the solution. Once a contract is in place, the installation timeline will be confirmed.

Services

The design of services (water, wastewater, power) and internal roading and taxiways to support future hangar development is underway and is due to be completed by the end of August. Consenting the design and procuring a contractor will take place over September and October. Once a contract is in place, the construction timeline will be confirmed.
