Castlepoint

Rangiwhakaoma

Castlepoint is a beautiful beach town with an iconic lighthouse, great surfing at 'The Gap' and a shop where you can pick up hot food, groceries and an ice block on a hot day. There is a small permanent population here and lots of summer visitors making the most of the beaches.

Please note that the reef should be approached with caution. Freak waves have been known to wash unsuspecting people into the sea. Please read and follow all warning signs. Parents, take extra care of your children on the reef and in the water.

Public Toilets

There are two blocks of public toilets located at either end of the township, one at the Lagoon which is available 24 hours and includes a foot wash. The other is on Jetty Road in front of the Sport Fishing Club and is open from 7am – 7pm during daylight savings and 8am – 5pm in winter.

Rubbish and Recycling

Castlepoint has a kerbside rubbish and recycling collection on Mondays. Please ensure your rubbish and recycling is kerbside by 7:30am on collection day in official Masterton District Council rubbish bags. Rubbish bags are $4.50 each and can be purchased in packs of 5 for $22.50 from the Castlepoint Store. Recycling should be put in crates, if you have more recycling than you can fit in a crate you can take it to the transfer station.

The Castlepoint transfer station is located 2km North of the township on the Masterton-Castlepoint Road and is open Wednesday 9am – 12pm and Sunday 11am – 3pm. If a non-council rubbish bag is used, the cost of dropping it at the transfer station is $8.

Camping

We recommend that people planning to camp book a site at Castlepoint Campground. They have a range of sites and cabins with great views of the lighthouse. Some camping is available for those with self-contained vehicles but there are restrictions in place to protect the natural environment so please refer to the freedom camping map before you consider staying there.
